Aix en Provence is situated in a plain overlooking the river Arc, about a mile from the right bank. It is a town of culture, art and water and the city is sometimes referred to as the city of a thousand fountains.
As a city of art and culture Aix possesses a wealth of superb architecture that has been carefully preserved and restored. Aix was the inspiration to many of the greatest writers and painters: Guigou, Stendhal, Mistral, Zola, and Cézanne to name but a few. Each summer there are International festivals of the Arts, Music and Dance.
Aix was the capitol of Provence in the 15th century and was inhabited by wealthy merchants and dignitaries.
Today the Cours Mirabeau, a wide road, lined with shady trees and several fountains, effectively divides Aix en Provence into two parts; the old and the new town. The Cours Mirabeau actually follows the borders of what were once the old city walls.
